A Healthy Detox Program

By Guest Blogger: Vivian Tiegen, RD,LD/N, CDE, M.Ed., Licensed Dietitian/Nutritionist

We are all exposed to many toxins and poisons in our environment and foods. Normally, our liver, kidneys, digestive system, and skin get rid of many of the toxins. Our genetic make-up also affects our ability to be a good "detoxifier". Some people lack a gene that assists with the detoxification process. People often seek out food and supplement programs to assist the body with detoxification. Many of these programs are unsafe and can have dangerous side effects.

There are safe, science based metabolic detoxification programs available. A good detoxification program is medically supervised and includes a medical food supplement that contains adequate protein to prevent muscle breakdown. A good source of fiber is included to assist with improvement in intestinal elimination without causing diarrhea or constipation. A healthy but low allergy potential elimination meal plan is recommended. Sugar, caffeine, and alcohol are avoided. Specific nutrient and plant-based supplements that support the liver, kidney, and digestive system are part of the detoxification protocol.

It is proposed that a medically supervised metabolic food-supplemented detoxification program is useful in the initiation of a weight loss program by assisting in the release of toxic chemicals stored in the liver and fatty tissue. Animal studies have shown that ingestion and fat storage of certain toxins may contribute to Insulin resistance, a condition that can lead to obesity, high cholesterol, and diabetes.

Studies also show that a clinically proven detoxification protocol may contribute to symptom relief of fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome.

Other conditions that are associated with environmental toxicity include cancer, fertility problems, headaches, and Parkinson’s disease. The body’s ability to get rid of toxic substances has been shown to be a factor in disease resistance. Functional and integrative medical professionals believe that detoxification programs may support the prevention of these medical problems.

At Acupuncture and Anti-aging Physicians Group in Jupiter, Florida, we offer a medically supervised ten or twenty-eight day detoxification program. For more information, come to a seminar at our office on Thursday, January 12, 2012 from 7 pm to 9 pm. The cost is $10.00 and can be applied to the purchase of a “Detoxification Package.” The seminar speakers are Elyse Marrone, RD, LD, Nutrition Specialist for Metagenics, Inc. and Vivian Tiegen, RD,M.Ed, CDE. of Acupuncture and Anti-Aging Physicians Group. To register, contact the office by phone: 561-624-9744 or e-mail at info@antiagingfl.com. If unable to attend the seminar, please contact the office to arrange a consultation with our dietitian to assess if a detoxification program would be a healthy choice for you. Bio-Identical Hormones

I have added Bio-Identicals to my practice.  Prescriptions of these medicines contain the exact amount of each hormone needed for each individual's optimal health.  Lab tests are specialized beyond the typical ones ordered by most doctors.  The hormones are derived from plant based sources unlike the synthetic hormones customarily prescribed.  There are many hormones that decline with age.  The American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M) is the current  standard for teaching, certifying and researching the relationships between aging and new treatments including bio-identicals.  We now offer these services by an A4M Board Certified MD.
